Members of the Salem Historical Society have appealed to the authorities to protect and preserve the 212 year old sun dial located inside the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Ponammapet, Salem.

Charles Carpenter the Trade Representative of East India Company who lived in Salem had installed the sun dial in 1808 in the open yard of his bungalow. It was used to the know the time of the day when the mechanical clocks were yet to be made. Captain Thomas Arthur a British captain who stayed in Salem had designed the sun dial for Charles Carpenter says J.Barnabas, the General Secretary, Salem Historical Society.

Except a stone pillar other parts of the sun dial have disappeared over the passage of time. The property of Charles Carpenter had changed hands and presently, The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology is built inside the land where Carpenter’s bungalow existed.

Members of the Salem Historical Society who undertook a field survey visited the place recently and have appealed to the authorities to build a platform with a fence around the existing part of the sun dial and place a board with the historic information written on it. This will help future generations to appreciate the remnants of Salem’s significant past said the society’s members.///

212 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான சூரியகடிகாரத்தின் பகுதி பாதுகாக்க சேலம் வரலாற்றுச் சங்கம் கோரிக்கை

சேலம் பொன்னம்மா பேட்டை யில் செயல்பட்டுவரும் இந்திய கைத்தறி தொழில்நுட்ப நிறுவன (Indian Institue of Handloom Technology)வளாகத்தில் 212 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான சூரிய கடிகாரத்தின் எஞ்சிய அடிப்பகுதி காணப்படுகிறது

.இது இந்த பகுதியில் ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆட்சிகாலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த பெரும் செல்வந்தரான பிரிட்டீஷ் கிழக்கிந்திய கம்பெனியின் வர்த்தக பிரதிநிதி சார்லஸ் கார்பென்டர் என்பவர் தனது பங்களாவிற்கு முன்பாக 1808 ஆம் ஆண்டு அமைத்த சூரிய கடிகாரத்தின் எஞ்சிய அடிப்பகுதிதான்.

1808 ல் அப்பொழுது சேலத்தில் தங்கியிருந்த பிரிட்டீஷ் தளபதி கேப்டன் தாமஸ் ஆர்த்தர் என்பவர்(Captain Thomas Arthur)சேலம் கிழக்கிந்திய கம்பெனியின் வர்த்தக பிரதிநிதி சார்லஸ் கார்பென்டருக்காக வடிவமைத்த இந்த சூரிய கடிகாரம் கால ஓட்டத்தில் ஒரு கல் தூணாக எஞ்சிநிற்கிறது. இந்த வரலாற்றுச் சின்ன ஆய்வுப் பயணத்தில் சேலம் வரலாற்றுச் சங்கப் பொதுச்செயலாளர் திரு.ஜே.பர்னபாஸ்,பேராசிரியர் டாக்டர் S .V.கோவிந்தராஜூஆகியோர் பங்கேற்றனர்.

212 ஆண்டுகள் கால வரலாற்றின் சாட்சியாக எஞ்சி நிற்கும் இந்த சூரியகடிகாரத்தின் கல்தூணை சுற்றிலும் பீடம் அமைத்தது இரும்பு அலங்கார கம்பி வேலி அமைத்து, அருகிலே இதன் வரலாற்றை சொல்லும் தகவல் பலகை அமைக்கவும் வேண்டுகோள் வைக்கிறோம்.
