Setting an example for the entire district to follow, the Salem Collectorate has become plastic waste free.
Declaring this on Monday, the Collector Rohini.R said that the staff and public have been told to avoid bringing disposable plastic material inside the collectorate campus. The Collectorate cafeteria will no more sell refreshments in disposable plastic cups or packing material. Indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste items inside the collectorate is forbidden and warning has been issued.
Posters have been stuck inside the collectorate declaring the collectorate as plastic waste free zone and appealing to the staff and pubic to avoid useb of plastic and its disposal.
State government offices functioning outside, Salem collectorate have been told to emulate the Collectorate’s plastic free status said the collector. Commercial establishments have also been told to adhere to plastic usage norms and avoid lesser micron plastic bags for packing. Tea shops and restaurants have been warned against packing hot cooked or boiled items in plastic bags or containers. Public should be aware that toxic substances can leach into food packed with plastic bags or throw-away containers.
Commercial establishments must adopt alternative materials like cloth for packing so that the non-degradable waste generated can be reduced. Food Safety Department, Municipal Corporation and Panchayat bodies will monitor plastic use by commercial establishments and penalize violators said the collector.
